In 2023, IMS celebrated the 90th birthday of Eduardo Coutinho with an extensive retrospective in São Paulo, spread over the year. But 2024 starts off with yet another celebration: it is the 40th anniversary of the release of Cabra Marcado para Morrer (Twenty Years Later, 1984), and the 60th anniversary of its interruption by the military coup, twenty years earlier.
Today, they’re holding a dream-triple screening in their theater in São Paulo, Brazil, starting with the 2013 restoration of the film on 35mm, followed by the two medium length films the director made for the DVD release, revisiting characters and locations of the original film: Sobreviventes da Galileia (Galileia Survivors, 2014), which focuses on members of the Galileia Peasant League; and Família de Elizabeth Teixeira (Elizabeth Teixeira’s Family, 2014), in which the filmmaker talks to Elizabeth, her brother, some of her children, and grandchildren. Rarely screened, these remarkable films ended up becoming the last two completed by the director.
To wrap up the day, IMS will screen the commentary track of the DVD, with editor Eduardo Escorel, critic Carlos Alberto Mattos, and Eduardo Coutinho, recorded only days before the filmmaker’s death. Both Twenty Years Later and the two medium length films will screen separately again this month, and the original Cabra will also play in the recently-inaugurated screening room at IMS Poços de Caldas.

Em 2023, o IMS comemorou o 90º aniversário de Eduardo Coutinho com uma extensa retrospectiva em São Paulo, que se estendeu por todo o ano. Mas 2024 traz ainda outra celebração: é o 40º aniversário do lançamento de Cabra Marcado para Morrer (Twenty Years Later, 1984) e o 60º aniversário de sua interrupção pelo golpe militar, vinte anos antes.
Hoje, eles realizam uma exibição tripla dos sonhos no IMS-SP, começando com a restauração do filme de 2013 em 35 mm, seguida pelos dois filmes de média-metragem que o diretor fez para o lançamento do DVD, revisitando personagens e locais do filme original: Sobreviventes da Galileia (2014), sobre os membros da Liga Camponesa de Galileia; e Família de Elizabeth Teixeira (2014), em que o cineasta conversa com Elizabeth, seu irmão, alguns de seus filhos e netos. Raramente exibidos, esses filmes notáveis acabaram se tornando os dois últimos concluídos pelo diretor.
Para encerrar o dia, o IMS exibirá a faixa comentada do DVD, com o editor Eduardo Escorel, o crítico Carlos Alberto Mattos, e Eduardo Coutinho, gravada poucos dias antes da morte do cineasta. Tanto Cabra quanto os dois médias-metragens serão exibidos separadamente novamente este mês, e o filme original passará também na recém-inaugurada sala de projeção do IMS Poços de Caldas.
