I have been invited to join a panel about the work of Steven Spielberg, whose films are being screened at a retrospective at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio, after screening in São Paulo and Brasília. The panel will take place at CCBB-Rio on Wednesday, April 26, at 7pm local time. I will be joining the critic Pedro Butcher and one of the programmers of the series, José de Aguiar, to chat about Spielberg’s work.
It will be an interesting opportunity to discuss an artist who has played a prominent role in shaping the public imaginary, and managed to create a body of work that is both coherent and varied. I have taught Spielberg’s work in class before, but I have only written about once, when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released in theaters, back in 2008. I have translated that piece to English, in case anyone is interested in what I thought about it back then. As usual, I will try to record my part of the talk and make some version of it available here in the near future.

Steven Spielberg no CCBB-Rio
Na quarta-feira, 26 de Abril, participarei de uma mesa de debate como parte da mostra Steven Spielberg, no CCBB-Rio. A mostra já passou por São Paulo e Brasília, e tem mais de 30 filmes do diretor em exibição, incluindo alguns em cópias 35mm. O debate será às 19h, na companhia do crítico Pedro Butcher e de José de Aguiar, um dos programadores da mostra. A entrada é gratuita.
Vai ser uma oportunidade de discutir o trabalho de um artista que tem tido papel proeminente na criação de um imaginário cinematográfico comum por meio de uma obra que é igualmente coerente e variada. Já pude conversar sobre seus filmes em sala de aula diversas vezes, mas escrevi sobre Spielberg em apenas uma ocasião, no lançamento de Indiana Jones e o Reino da Caveira de Cristal, em 2008. Quarta-feira será oportunidade de trazer outras ideias e impressões para a mesa.
