With the final stretch of dissertation writing taking most of time and energy, the website has provisionally turned into a repository for events. I do hope that will change soon, but I am also thrilled that my stay in Brazil has created so many opportunities for talks and public conversations after being away for so many years.
This Tuesday, I will be in São Paulo for a post-screening conversation as part of an amazing retrospective of the great Paula Gaitán at CineSesc. I worked with Gaitán in many capacities on her 2013 feature film, Os Exilados do Vulcão (The Volcano Exiles), which won the main prize at the Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro, as well as the award for best sound design—which I had the pleasure of co-creating. The retrospective is showing a wide array of works by one of Brazil’s most prolific and talented filmmakers, and I will have the pleasure of joining her and filmmaker Caetano Gotardo after the film, which screens at 8pm.
I’m looking forward to rewatching The Volcano Exiles, which I haven’t done since 2014. Working with Paula Gaitán was a remarkable experience, which took roughly one year—between 2012 and 2013—and I am very attached to the process and what came out of it. The film can be watched worldwide alongside other works by the director at DA Films (although the credits are all wrong). A légua final do processo de pesquisa e escrita da tese tem tomado muito do meu tempo e energia, o que acabou transformando o site temporariamente em um repositório de eventos. Espero que isso mude em breve, no entanto fico muito feliz de que essa temporada no Brasil tenha produzido tantas oportunidades para conversas e debates depois de tantos anos distante.
Nesta terça-feira, 13 de Junho, estarei em São Paulo para uma conversa após a exibição do filme Exilados do Vulcão (2013), como parte da incrível retrospectiva da cineasta Paula Gaitán, com curadoria de Ava Rocha. Eu trabalhei em diversas posições nesse filme que foi premiado com o Candango de melhor longa-metragem de ficção no Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro, onde ganhou também o prêmio de melhor som—do qual participo como desenhista sonoro e editor. A retrospective reúne uma grande e variada amostra de uma das cineastas mais prolíficas e talentosas do Brasil, e terei o prazer de conversar com ela e com o cineasta Caetano Gotardo após a exibição do filme, às 20h.
Confesso que estou animado e curioso para revistar o filme, que não revejo desde 2014. Trabalhar com Paula foi experiência marcante, que me ocupou por cerca de um ano ano—entre 2012 e 2013—e me sinto plenamente representado pelo processo e pelo filme que dali resultou. O filme está disponível para streaming junto a outros títulos dirigidos pela cineasta no catálogo da Embaúba Play.
