May 11th marks the 90th birthday of the great Eduardo Coutinho. To celebrate the occasion, and foster new readings of an endlessly rich body of work, Cláudia Mesquita, Kamilla Medeiros and I will be co-editing “Eduardo Coutinho, 90 Anos,” a thematic dossier of the journal Rebeca, the journal of the Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos de Cinema e Audiovisual (Socine). The call for papers is out, and we will be accepting submissions until June 30th. The dossier will be published in Rebeca 24, volume 12, n.2, 2023. I have spent the past six years researching Coutinho’s work, and every day devoted to it seems to confirm that—as popular as some of his films might have been, and with all the great theoretical work it has elicited—we are still only beginning to scratch the surface. It will be exciting to see how other people are relating to his films in the present, and what futures that entails.

11 de Maio marca o 90o aniversário do grande Eduardo Coutinho. Em comemoração pela ocasião, e com o desejo de fomentar novas leituras de uma obra tão vasta, diversa, e rica, Cláudia Mesquita, Kamilla Medeiros e eu estamos co-editando “Eduardo Coutinho, 90 anos,” um dossiê temático para a revista Rebeca. A chamada para trabalhos já foi publicada, e ficará aberta para envios até 30 de Junho. O dossiê será publicado na Rebeca 24, volume 12, n.2, Jul-Dezembro de 2023. Nos últimos seis anos, tenho dedicado grande parte do meu tempo à pesquisa da obra de Coutinho, e cada dia de trabalho parece reforçar que—com toda a popularidade de alguns de seus filmes, e com o excelente trabalho teórico que surgiu a partir deles—nós ainda estamos apenas começando a penetrá-lo. Será estimulante ter uma medida de como o presente se relaciona com seus filmes, e quais futuros ali se descortinam.
