It is hard to say how many websites I have started and drifted away from in the past few years. Some of these were hosted in platforms that grew obsolete, others are jammed with corrupt databases, and a good number of them float around unattended, like the abandoned ship that crashed against the Rio-Niterói bridge a couple of months ago. Yet, here I am starting another one, and this introduction is partially to say that formalities can get tiresome after you’ve gone through them so many times, so I will skip as much of them as possible, hopefully for everybody’s benefit.
That does not spare me from trying to explain, even if mostly for myself, what the plan is for yet another website, especially one devoted to the dying practice of writing about art. For the most part, my writing—primarily on film, but also music, literature, television, and visual arts—has been spread in multiple sources, few of which are under my control. Personal blogs, exhibition catalogs, books, online magazines, websites and such have been published and forgotten, sometimes disappearing even before those texts could reach their potential readership. As an archival researcher myself, I am acutely aware of the speed with which things get lost, and how some basic organization—or even the mere duplication of materials—can make a world of difference. I do not expect my work to elicit substantial interest in the future, but again, as an archival researcher myself, I must avoid anticipating what kind of weird stuff people will care about in the long run, for whatever reason, including critique. What I can do, however, is contain the spread and add some order to the mess I have created, instead of just leaving it all scattered out there.
One of the primary impulses of this website is to collect some of the essays, articles, and other effronteries I have published over the years, and keep as many as possible in one place. This will be a constant work in progress, but in the ENGLISH and PORTUGUÊS tabs you will already find a significant number of pieces I have written over the years, some of them appearing online for the first time, and others being finally translated to other languages than the one in which they were originally published. Whenever possible, I preserved their original publication date, making the archive a form of timeline. You also have access to some of my work on film and video, which is not secondary or unrelated to my critical work, nor is it a direct translation of it. While personal websites such as this could be interpreted as a form of collection, I should clarify that the reasons why certain pieces have already been included while others are yet to be incorporated are mostly practical, and will likely remain this way.
But there is also this part here, which is perhaps closer to another dying practice: blogging. The desire to write without external motivation has been rekindled after the fairly long period of reevaluation forced by the covid-19 pandemic, which is also behind the archival impulse solidified here. For one, I miss the more immediate and loose side of writing, which I think can add something to the elongated arc of academic research. But I am also interested in testing forms of interaction that can exist outside of social media—spaces that have exhausted me precisely for how the “media” has been shaping the “social.” So when I say “blogging” it is perhaps worth emphasizing that I mean to write about things, objects, events, and anything else I am interested in but myself. Of course, that is the most personal type of writing, so I feel no obligation to react to current events, nor to avoid them. It is writing as percussion, not repercussion.
I guess that covers most of the basics, although one could argue that I was not able to keep my promise of skipping the formalities altogether. Because links can get lost quickly, and habits take time to develop, I encourage you to subscribe and get notified by email of new posts. This is all automated, and I will not be using this list for anything else. My expectation is to post something new at least a couple of times every week. Until, of course, I break that promise too. Boas vindas
É difícil precisar quantos websites eu inaugurei, mantive, e desertei ao longo dos últimos anos. Alguns foram hospedados em plataformas hoje obsoletas, outros se engalfinharam em bancos de dados corrompidos, e uma boa parte segue sem vigia, como o navio abandonado que se chocou contra a ponte Rio-Niterói poucos meses atrás. No entanto, cá estou começando mais um site, e esta introdução serve em parte para dizer que as formalidades cansam, e por isso evitarei-as ao máximo—para benefício coletivo, espero.
Isso não me poupa de tentar explicar, principalmente para mim mesmo, meu desejo na criação de mais um site, em especial um dedicado a uma prática em desaparição: escrever sobre arte. Meus escritos—sobretudo sobre cinema, mas também sobre música, literatura, televisão, e artes visuais—se esparramaram por diversos veículos diferentes que, em maioria, fogem totalmente do meu controle. Blogs pessoais, catálogos de mostras, livros, revistas online, sites e adjacentes foram publicados e esquecidos, às vezes sumindo antes mesmo de os textos chegarem a seus leitores e leitoras em potencial. Como eu trabalho com pesquisa em arquivos, tenho total consciência da velocidade com que as coisas se perdem, e de como uma mínima organização—ou mesmo a pura duplicação de materiais—pode fazer diferença. Não tenho qualquer expectativa de que meu trabalho solicite interesse no futuro, mas minha experiência em pesquisa também me proíbe de tentar adivinhar o tipo de esquisitice que interessará às pessoas, e por quais razões, incluindo as mais críticas. O que posso fazer é conter um pouco a minha própria bagunça e tentar não deixá-la jogada por todo canto.
Com isso, um dos impulsos vitais deste site é coletar ensaios, artigos, e outras impertinências que publiquei ao longo dos anos, e manter o máximo sob um mesmo teto. É um trabalho em eterno processo, mas nas abas PORTUGUÊS e ENGLISH já há um número significativo de textos escritos ao longo dos anos, alguns disponíveis pela primeira vez online, e outros finalmente traduzidos da língua em que foram originalmente publicados. Sempre que possível, preservei a data de publicação original, o que torna o arquivo uma linha do tempo navegável. Há também links com alguns dos meus vídeos de curta-metragem, e de filmes com os quais colaborei. Esses trabalhos não são secundários ou desvinculados totalmente da minha prática crítica, mas tampouco são tradução direta dela. Embora sites pessoais possam ser interpretados como uma forma de coleção ou antologia, cabe esclarecer que as razões para certos textos serem incluídos enquanto outros aguardam nova oportunidade são em maioria práticas, e este provavelmente seguirá sendo o principal critério.
Mas há também esta seção aqui, que talvez esteja mais próxima de outra prática em desaparição: o blog. O desejo de escrever fora do jugo das motivações externas foi reaceso ao longo do período longo de reavaliação forçado pela pandemia do covid-19, que também está por trás do impulso arquivista aqui concretizado. De partida, sinto falta da escrita mais solta e imediata, que tem algo de diferente a acrescentar ao arco alongado da pesquisa acadêmica. Mas também tenho interesse em testar formas de interação fora da arena das mídias sociais—espaços dos quais me desvinculei quase totalmente justamente pela forma como o lado “mídia” tem determinado o “social.” Portanto, quando falo em “blog” talvez caiba o friso de que o desejo é escrever sobre coisas, objetos, eventos, e tudo que me interesse além de mim mesmo. Naturalmente, não há forma de escrita mais pessoal do que essa, portanto me desobrigo de reagir aos eventos diários, e também de fugir deles. A meta é a escrita como percussão, não como repercussão.
Basta de introdução, sabendo que posso ser justamente acusado de já ter quebrado a promessa de evitar formalidades.
